Is that the glassy calm of a Buddhist monk
meditating on the endless cycle of samsara?
Or is it using a shard of glass to remove
the price tag from a brand new sweater?
Perhaps ripping all the windows out
of the old house you are restoring?
No, vitreous detachment is a potentially serious medical
condition. It is rare in persons under 40, but it becomes
increasingly common with age, especially after 55 or so.
Vitreous humor is the eye-goo occupying most of the interior
of the eyeball. As we age, the goo shrinks and pulls away from
the retina (light-sensitive tissue at the back of the eye), usually
suddenly. This shrinking can tear the retina, which may cause
flashes of light or an increase in the number of “floaters,” the
generally transparent deposits sometimes visible in the eye.
This tearing can lead to a detached retina, which
is even more serious than a vitreous detachment.
If the retina detaches from the back of the eye
its blood supply is cut off and blindness is likely.
A few days ago, I noticed a new floater in my right eye.
A black ring, not a transparent one. I decided to ignore it.
Fortunately, the next day I changed my mind and went to
the ER. The doctor found that there was indeed a vitreous
detachment and sent me off to my ophthalmologist who
discovered microscopic blood specks at the back of the
eye and sent me off to a retinal specialist who zapped
the eye (101 times) with a photocoagulating laser
to tack down the retina, preventing detachment.
The healing process has begun.
I am telling you this because as noted above my first
impulse was to ignore the floater. That's a bad idea.
New floaters should be checked out. Flashes too.
Having been medically sensitized, I'm off to get
my annual flu vaccination at the local pharmacy.
