Children should know where they came from,
tread the stones their grandparents once trod on.

Their little hands should sift the ancestral tillage,
their mouths taste the fare that nourished forebears.

But children need wings as well, to leave the old
land and replant themselves in new, fertile soil.

And if they can choose only one, if they
must decide either roots or else wings...
