Children should know where they came from,
tread stones their grandparents once trod on.

Their little hands should sift the ancestral acreage,
their mouths taste fare that nourished forebears.

Children also need wings so they can leave the old
place and replant themselves in fresh, untilled soil.

If they may have only one of these things, if
they must choose either roots or else wings...
