Sergeant Preston of the Yukon
Will de Kypia

Sure, I remember Sergeant Preston.
He was the most famous Mountie ever!

On a TV show a long time ago he and
Yukon King — the sturdy husky who led
his sled dog team —
roamed Canada's
legendary Klondike gold rush region.

Which is so way far up in the Arctic
tundra I bet you can almost see
the North Pole from there.

On Thursday night we would all
watch that pair of good guys track
down some bad guys who always got
caught by the end of the episode.

The show's sponsor was Quaker Oats
and if you mailed a cereal box top off to
them they'd send you the genuine deed
to one square inch of Klondike land.

I got mine and planned to put
a Monopoly house on the tiny lot
when I went north to drop in
on Santa and Mrs. Claus.

Travelling by dog sled of course.

Until the year I turned nine,
learned there is no Santa Claus,
and abandoned my childish scheme.

We didn't even own a car then,
much less a sled dog team.

But I still have that deed
to a little boy's dream.
